End of Year Tog Limit

Had the afternoon open to kill some time Called my buddies Scott and John and hit some local snags to tog. Went with the whiteleggers today in nice sunny flat conditions. First 2 spots where very slow. Third spot was the charm built the life and slammed the tog, had our limit and had many quality fish with few throwbacks. Had 4 fish over 9lbs, and 2 over 10lbs. Newbie tog fisherman John, had his limit and landed 2 of the 10's and one of the nine's, told him that is the best cherry trip for a tog fisherman I ever heard of!

Capt Keith was at the helm today, with Mike and Both Matt's on board he ran down the beach in dark to get in on the Bass bite. Had a good early bite putting 8 in the box. As soon as it started it was over. Weekend boat traffic made it tougher, but nice day out for the guys.

Offshore Bottom Trip

Had Hard-core regulars Sam M, Ed-Eamon, and Bill. Plan was to run way offshore and jig Cod and Pollack, then hit inshore wrecks for jumbo seabass that haven't made the offshore wrecks. Made good time to the 70 mile wrecks while sun was coming up, tons of Humpback porgies that are not llegal and bluefish. Very few big seabass and Pollack or Cod. Hit a few more wrecks same deal. Went inshore and found some humpback seabass, more porgies and doggies. Hit another piece and ran out of daylight. Wound up with 2 dozen keeper seabass to 5lbs, over 60 big porgies. Want to thank the guys for fishing hard in tough sea conditions, NOAA, got it wrong, 20-25 knot winds in 4-7 foot seas.

Striper Limit, Bottom Fishing with Adam Conley Charter

Had Adam out with Dad John and buddies Mark Sr and Jr, and Larry. Started out jigging our limit of stripers to 15lbs in the first hour down south, went into release mode letting over 20 go. Around 9am the guys wanted to try togging, after some practice they all landed their first keepers, landing 6, and releasing another dozen with some nice seabass to add to their catch. Great first trip with some great guys!

Bottomfish Trip with the Chuck Routar Charter

Had Chuck out today, with Buddies Bobx2, Lenny, Herb, and Frank. Started out togging, hit 3 different pieces with little to show for it, changed gears and ran offshore, had nice pick for rest of the day. Ended up with close to 40 Seabass, 20 Ling, half a dozen Cod, and 2lb Bergall!

Striper Limit with the Alex Perafan Charter

Had Alex with buddies Stefano, Carlos, Barney, and Juan Pablo Senior and Junior. Started out jigging our limit early on in the shallows between 20-35 feet. Once we had our limit we did some trolling so the guys could drink some beers and hear some tunes releasing another 20 fish. Made an attempt at bottom fishing but rough conditions later in the afternoon made that tough. Great day with a bunch of fellow countrymen. Also many Striper cherries popped in the bunch!

Striper Limit with the Serpe Family

Had Anita Serpe call me a couple of months back looking for a Birthday trip for her husband Richard. Told her what I could offer her husband and son Nick. She booked on the spot, had our chance today after waiting for the Striper run to start. Timing was everything, even with the forecasted winds of 30 knots, tight to the beach it wasn't bad at all. Made our run to the south and got our limit on the first couple of drifts, after that we went into release mode, then went trolling to try something different. Great part of the trip was the father and son bonding and young Nick kicking his Dad's butt, and talking smack on top of it. Great day with loads of fun.

Mixed Bag Trip with the Jeremy Harrington Charter

Had Jeremy on board with buddy Bruce and father and son team of Caz and Chad. Plan was to try for Bluefin, even with the lack of reports, read the fish tried trolling, chunking and jiggin but no bites. Shifted gears and set up on a wreck for seabass, had 2 keeper Cod and 25 Seabass, and over 30 shorts in little over an hour when we got wind of great Striper bite to the south. After talking to the crew we made the run down the beach, caught the tail end of the bite but did manage to land 3 keeper stripers and 15 Blues to 12lbs. On the way home Jeremy made up some Seabass ceviche to end the a great day on a high note!

Stacy Family Mixed Bag Charter

Had Nick with uncles Bob and Steve on board for a half day charter. Since Nick had to get to football practice and with the conditions today I figured It would be a challenge but I'm always up for it. Started out jigging under birds and lots of blues from 5-12lbs, with Nick landing his first Striper at 30 inches, after landing close to 30 Blues the crew decided to switch gear and bottomfish. Landed over 60 seabass with 20 being over keeper size. Taught Nick how to tog and he caught on quick landing his first Tog at 6lbs. Fun day with a great crew on a nice sunny day!

A Halloween Mixed Bag

GREAT DAY on the water today with Captain Fred, David, Larry & Joe! Started out early on the troll/jig/chunk but could not find the bluefin bite. Not a whole lot of reported tuna activity today that we heard...

Hit several wrecks picking up 37 ling, 6 keeper cod and a bunch of pre-season sea bass (which were returned to the ocean to be caught in the next 60 days; sucks that we were only a day shy as we caught some nice sized keepers).

On the way in, met up with some boats working piles of birds picking @ jumbo blues (14 boated - many more will swim another day). Stripers were popping all over the top but the Blues were all that were biting.

First time fishing with Captain Fred on Andreas Toy; great FAST boat with a captain who is not afraid to burn gas getting to the grounds and moving around to find fish. Highly recommended; thanks for a great day!

Canyon Trip with the "Regulars"

Had repeat canyon crew Dan Bombaci, Art Hoover, and Dan Payet. These guys had have some memorable canyon trips, however this one was not the one. Heard off tough reports in Hudson so went south, got to the canyon and found clean 71 degree water, started the troll landed some skippies and lost our first good bite. Went into chunk mode and battled Pup Mako, and Blue sharks throughout the night. Did land a couple of gaffer mahi, but no tuna. Went on the troll and landed more skippies, some more gaffer mahi and our lone Longfin. Tough trip, but guys busted my stones, but appreciated the effort!

Canyon Mixed Bag with the Bill Scott Charter

Hosted Bill with brothers Bob, Roger, and nephew Joe. Bill had booked me wanting to give his brother Roger his 50th Birthday Gift. He told me they were experienced boat owners but have never fished the canyon, landed a tuna or overnighted. Felt this would be a challenging yet rewarding trip. Decided to try this weekend due the latest forecast based off of the small weather window, our overnight runs coming to a close shortly, and the good vibes on the water I was going to fish. Due to weather and other issues we got to the canyon too late to be able to put in a good troll effort. Decided to drift the deep due to the comfortable conditions and the guys really wanted to see a sword. Once we set up and turned on the hydro-glow and threw the meat the life began to build. Had squid, lots of bait, and swords swimming through the lights. Bill landed our first pup, then released it. A bigger sword showed up but would not commit. Wrestled half a dozen Blue Sharks to 10 feet but no tuna till morning. Had our first and only flurry going 2-4 on a yellow and a 60lb Longfin. Went on the troll and had instant action all of the guys landed their first tuna with Roger (Birthday Boy) also landing his first mahi, landed another half dozen Longfin in less than hour and crew had enough and made the run for home being at the dock before lunch. Really enjoyed this trip, for a couple of reasons, Popped 4 guys tuna cherries, landed 5 different species, had good weather and guys wanting more of canyon fishing!

Open Boat Yellowfin Limit-Sword

Had an open boat trip with regulars Sam M, Chris M, and J.S, and newcomer Dave. Ran south in sloppy conditions, found the 77 degree, cobalt blue water and put in the lines, no tuna but lots of skippies, after trolling for 4 hours decided that the area that had the most bait would be where we would set up for the night. Before we came tight on anchor the fishfinder lit up like a christmas tree, first line in the water instant bite on a sardine right under the lights for the next hour lock and load until we had our limit. Took a break and cleared our heads half of the crew getting a bite to eat until midnight when it the bite came on again, charter decided to take crew limit strictly on jigs drop to marks and hold on, had a good bite, until Sam and J.S. went to work half an hour later we had an 100lb sword on a Tallica 12-Terez combo tuna chunking outfit in the boat. From 1-4am everyone took a nap, Sam decided to have some fun from 4-5am we had 2-4 fish on on jigs, leadering and releasing all fish safely. Total tally 30 plus tuna to 50lbs landed, Limit harvested rest released, 100lb Sword and lots of ball busting! Ran back to the dock and cleaned up by lunchtime. Fun crew and great action.

Total tally 25 keeper seabass to 4lbs,over 50 short seabass, half a dozen short cod, a dozen short fluke, half a dozen ling and some porgies. Fun guys, lots of action and good guys!

Mixed Bag Canyon trip with John Ryan Charter

Had John out again this year for his yearly Canyon run with buddies Lane and newcomers Fred and Ray. His week was the same time of the Manasquan River Offshore Tournament, so we decided to enter. Saw the offshore charts and to knew we would be in for a long run to at least the 500 line. Started in Hudson and water was green and cold, worked my way down to the Toms and found the water I wanted. Started the trip playing with some mahi to fill the box and to find a slammer for the tournament. Then went on the troll in earnest pulled the hook on a good fish prior to night chunk. Night was very slow with lots of squid but only blue sharks to show up until first light when we had a nice flurry. Landed one on a jig and pulled the hook on another when a Big 8 foot Blue shark crashed the party and ended the bite. Went on the troll and did not have a knockdown all morning. Due to slow reports and not having any decent fish to weigh in we decided to deep drop for tiles to add some variety to the box. Landed half a dozen to Ray's 20lb'r. This was the crews first time tilefishing and they all popped their cherries, congrats.

Mahi-Wreck Trip with the Stone Family

Had Chet back again with sons Eric and Mike from "Cali". Called me wanting to catch fish to make Fish Taco's for family down at the shore this evening. Suggested starting with mahi which are fun to catch on light tackle and a wreck for Cod,ling, & seabass to spice it up, he agreed. Made the run early and had Eric and Mike land their first mahi's of their lives. Then ran inshore and hit a wreck to catch 20 nice seabass, cod and ling. Great weather with a fun crew to fish with.

Canyon Trip with the Chris Decresce Charter

Had longtime customer Chris with son Luke, nephew John, and good buddy John. Started looking for inshore chunking grounds-Bluefin haunts, no luck dirty green water further north than expected. Set up behind a shucking scallop boat but water was so dirty could barely see in water. Finally got to Hudson canyon with only 2 hours of dark to chunk, no luck, Went on the troll at first light and Chris landed a nice 40lb yellowfin quickly, with the massive amounts of bait and life in area we decided to stay close. No more bites, tried tilefishing some new grounds no luck with drift and thunderstorms moving through area. Ended up working a pot and Luke and John landing their first ever mahi. Ran inshore to mahi grounds but area were picked pretty clean. Long day for a great crew, but tried our best.

Mahi Afternoon Delight with the Greg Reese Crew

Had Greg out with his Dad Bill and Buddy Tony. Plan was to light tackle Mahi. Left the dock at lunchtime and made the run way east till I found the right water, had a couple of chicken to get us warmed up. Pushed further east and found the right ones. Landed a pair of Mahi to 20lbs on a bucktail and chunk. Wound up with half a dozen and back at the dock before nightfall. Good summer time fun!

Canyon Trip with Mat Losielle Charter

Had Mat out with Dad Al, girlfriend Colleen, and buddies Chris and Dave. Set sail in the dark for the canyon for night chunk and morning day troll. Made great time in full moon, set up near canyon and took drift right into it, had life within half and hour yellows to 30lbs, had fish swimming through light and fish ate from dark into first light once bite died, we had 7 yellows in the box. Did a little mahi fishing and the charter landed a couple. Rather than troll charter wanted to hit some wrecks for Pollack leaving canyon, saw some life and dropped the jigs and bait, flatlined sardine went off, and an hour later we had a 120lb 58 and half incher in the box. After that chartered had enough and made the run back to the barn. Great day of fishing with a great crew Mat, Al, doing great and Colleen proving she is one of the best fisherwomen I have witnessed, and Chris and Dave popping their tuna cherries!

Bluefin/mahi - Wilson Gamma

Had Wilson and the boys out for a bluefin trip yesterday. Left the dock around 3:15 and arrived at the grounds around first light. The area looked promising with a good amount of tuna chicks and some spread out life. After poking around a few minutes we stopped on a couple marks and the guys hooked up two fish right away to have them both come unbuttoned quickly. We pounded the area for a while looking all over, stopped on lots of bait a few times but nothing but bluefish. Stopped at some pots for mahi but with the dirty green water you could barely even see the mahi under the pots (the few that there were). Made a move further south east and found some nicer water. Put out the trolling spread and picked up a couple mahi. Hit a bunch of areas on the way in only to find green lifeless water all the way back. Tough day but a fun crew as always.
